The Real Horse Behind the Coloring Book

When you first meet Butter, you notice her soft eyes and quiet confidence. She isn’t flashy or demanding — she’s the kind of horse who lets her presence speak for itself. What I didn’t realize when I bought her was that she would completely change the direction of my life and the Magic Valley Horses project.

A Different Dream

When I first started Magic Valley Horses, my plan was to build a small breeding program. Butter was part of that dream — a beautiful mare, already in foal when I purchased her. I imagined raising and selling foals that would go on to bring joy and purpose to others.

But living in rural South Texas meant facing some unexpected challenges. Trainers were few, and the opportunities to show young horses were almost nonexistent. Without those stepping stones, it became clear that the original plan just wasn’t sustainable.

At the same time, I was trying to grow my equine-assisted learning program, Strides to Excellence, to help people learn teamwork and communication through horses. But when that, too, slowed down, I began asking myself a big question:

If these horses couldn’t help people in the arena, how else could they make a difference?

From Pasture to Pageā„¢

That’s when Butter quietly showed me the answer.

One afternoon, I snapped a photo of her standing in the pasture — her golden coat glowing in the sunlight, her expression calm and kind. There was something so peaceful about her in that moment that I knew she represented everything Magic Valley Horses was meant to be.

That photograph became the inspiration for the very first From Pasture to Pageā„¢ coloring book. What began as a practical business idea transformed into something much more meaningful: a way to share the real horses of Magic Valley and the lessons they naturally teach — kindness, courage, and connection.

Each page of Butter’s coloring book captures her gentle strength and the quiet magic she brings to the herd. Kids don’t just color her image; they get to read and feel her story.

Lessons from Butter, the Real Horse Behind the Coloring Book

Butter teaches us that you don’t always have to be loud to be strong, and sometimes, life’s detours lead to something even better than the original plan. She’s a reminder that patience and kindness can open new doors — even ones you never imagined.

Whether it’s a child coloring her picture or a parent reading her story aloud, I hope everyone who meets Butter through her book feels that same gentle strength I see every day.
