When I walked out to the pasture that morning, Liberty was already waiting for me.
He lifted his head slowly, like he always does, with that soft, easygoing look in his eyes.
Nothing unusual there.
But his mane…
Well, that was another story.
It was completely tangled. Twisted into little knots from top to bottom, like someone had been playing in it all night long.
I laughed and walked over to him, reaching out to run my fingers through the mess.
“Liberty… what did you do?”
He blinked at me, calm as ever. Innocent, of course.
But standing there in the quiet morning, I couldn’t help but wonder…
What if it wasn’t him at all?
That night had been still. No wind. No storms.
Just a soft sky full of stars stretching over the pasture.
The kind of night where anything feels possible.
Maybe… just maybe…
A few tiny visitors had slipped through the fence under the cover of darkness.
Quiet as whispers.
Light as air.
I could almost picture it.
Little fairies landing gently in the grass, their wings glowing faintly in the moonlight.
Drawn to Liberty—because of course they would be.
He’s kind.
He’s patient.
And just goofy enough not to mind a bit of company.
Maybe one of them reached up and grabbed a strand of his long mane.
Then another.
And another.
Before long, they were braiding and twisting and tying tiny knots, giggling as they worked.
Climbing up his back.
Sliding down his sides.
Holding onto his mane as they went for a midnight ride across the pasture.
And Liberty?
He probably just stood there.
Half-asleep.
Completely unbothered.
Maybe he flicked an ear.
Maybe he sighed.
Or maybe… just maybe…
He enjoyed it.
By the time the first light of morning touched the pasture, the fairies were gone.
Vanished as quietly as they came.
Leaving behind only one small clue…
A mane full of tangles.
I smiled and started gently working through the knots, one by one.
“Fairies again?” I asked him.
Liberty lowered his head just a little and leaned into me, like he always does.
Not confirming.
Not denying.
Just being Liberty.
And honestly?
I’m still not completely sure what happened that night.
But every time I find his mane tangled like that…
I can’t help but wonder.
So… did fairies really visit Liberty that night?
Well… probably not 😄
But the idea of “fairy knots” has been around for a very long time.
In old European folklore, people believed that fairies or pixies would sneak into stables at night, ride the horses, and braid their manes into little knots. Those tangles were often called fairy knots or witches’ knots, and some even believed they were a sign of good luck.
It’s easy to see how that story started.
Because sometimes, those tangles seem to appear out of nowhere.
🌾 What Really Causes the Tangles?
In real life, there are a few simple reasons horses end up with messy manes—especially horses like Liberty.
- Rolling in the grass or dirt
- Wind moving the mane around overnight
- Burrs, seeds, or dry grass getting caught
- Natural movement and friction
And then there’s the mane itself.
Some horses have coarse, thick manes that stay relatively smooth and untangled.
Others—like Liberty—have a fine, silky mane that just loves to tangle.
Add a full night outside, and it doesn’t take much for those little knots to show up by morning.
💛 But Here’s the Fun Part…
Even when we know the real reason…
It’s still kind of fun to wonder.
Because when you walk out early in the morning, and everything is quiet, and your horse is standing there with a mane full of tiny knots…
It doesn’t feel like just wind and grass.
It feels like something happened.
Something a little magical.
🐴 Liberty’s Version of the Story
If Liberty could tell the story himself, I have a feeling he wouldn’t argue with the fairy explanation at all.
It’s a lot more interesting than:
“I rolled in the dirt and took a nap.”
And honestly… it suits him.
Because if any horse were going to host a few midnight visitors,
stand patiently while they played in his mane,
and then act like nothing happened the next morning…
It would be Liberty.
