Stories, Horses & Hands-On Fun
Bring storytime to life at Magic Valley Horses.
Storytime with the Herd is a small-group ranch experience designed especially for children approximately ages 3–8. Children hear a horse-inspired story, meet the real horses behind Magic Valley Horses, and enjoy gentle hands-on activities that connect the storybook world with the horses standing right beside them.
It’s part storytime, part horse experience, and a wonderful way for young children to learn, explore, and build confidence in a relaxed ranch setting.
From Pasture to Page—and Back Again
Magic Valley Horses stories are inspired by the real horses who live here at the ranch. Storytime gives children the chance to discover the real animals behind the pages.
As we read, children may see real photographs from the horses’ lives—including pictures of them as babies—and hear a little about the events and personalities that inspired the story.
And, of course, they get to meet the horses themselves.
What Happens During Storytime?
Each visit is a little different depending on the featured story, the ages of the children, and the horses participating that day, but a Storytime with the Herd experience may include:
- A Magic Valley Horses story read in the barn
- Meeting the real horse—or horses—featured in the story
- Real photographs and stories from the horses’ lives
- Learning a little about horse behavior, care, and communication
- Gentle hands-on grooming
- Supervised leading and a simple introduction to confidence and leadership
- A fun horse or barn activity while children wait for their turn
- A horse-themed take-home surprise for each participating child
All horse activities take place on the ground. There is no riding.
More Than Just a Story
Young children often know horses through books, movies, and pictures. Being beside a real horse is something entirely different.
They can discover how tall a horse really is, feel the texture of a coat and mane, watch ears and expressions change, learn how grooming tools are used, and experience what it feels like to quietly guide a horse from the ground.
Even a simple leading exercise can become a lesson in being calm, clear, confident, and aware of another living being.
Our goal is to encourage curiosity, confidence, imagination, kindness, and connection while giving children a positive first—or early—experience with horses.
Designed for Young Children & Small Groups
Storytime with the Herd is best suited for approximately ages 3–8 and works especially well for:
- Homeschool groups and co-ops
- Preschool and early-elementary groups
- Groups of families and friends
- Parent and grandparent groups
- Libraries and children’s organizations
- Other small groups looking for a unique ranch experience
No previous horse experience is necessary.
Because hands-on time is an important part of the experience, Storytime is intentionally designed for smaller groups. If you have a larger homeschool group, co-op, school, or organization, ask about our field trip options, which can be adapted for larger groups and rotating activities.

Come Meet the Horses Behind the Stories
Magic Valley Horses began with a real herd and the stories those horses inspired.
Storytime with the Herd brings everything full circle—from pasture, to page, and back to the pasture again.
If your children would enjoy stories, horses, and a little hands-on adventure, we’d love to welcome your group to the ranch.
